On Friday afternoon, March 29th, Mrs. Jamie Cornelius, aka Mary Poppins, and the students and staff at Mt. Vernon Elementary School held their annual All School Sing/Musical Dress Up Day! This yearly activity is a culminating event in celebration of Music in Our Schools Month around the nation and one that all students and staff look forward to with anticipation. Music in our Schools Month is celebrated to bring awareness of the importance of music in our daily lives, as well as the importance of the arts in our schools. Each year follows a different theme for the music and dress up day. The theme for this year was “All Music—All People.” Since the Spring of 1997, MVES has had many visiting musicians to perform at the Sing, as well as staff members to participate in talent acts. This year, students from Rockcastle County Middle School, as well as a group of retired Rockcastle County teachers entertained the student body with several songs, both vocal and instrumental. MVES students and classrooms across grade levels also joined in and presented various musical acts. Perhaps the most wonderful moments in the afternoon included those songs that had been taught in music class throughout the year and were sung by the entire school!
Mrs. Cornelius and the staff at MVES are dedicated to the celebration of music and the arts and it is obvious that the students certainly enjoyed the day!
