Recently Mrs. Jamie Cornelius, music teacher at Mt. Vernon Elementary and known to her current and former students as “Ms. Jamie” was awarded the 30 year Citation of Service Award at the 2020 Kentucky Music Educator’s State Conference. The award is presented to those distinguished educators who have reached an exceptional milestone in their careers in music education. Ms. Jamie’s career began in 1990 as an itinerant general music teacher at both Mt. Vernon and Livingston Elementary Schools. After the consolidation of those schools in the mid 90’s, Ms. Jamie founded her elementary choir known as the Pentatones, which has become a long-standing tradition of musical enrichment and excitement for 5th graders at Mt. Vernon Elementary. When asked about her favorite memory over the years in regards to this ensemble, Ms. Jamie stated that one of her many special moments was the first PTG performance involving students from both Livingston AND Mt. Vernon. Students came together to perform “Look to the Future”, demonstrating the power of music to unite us all. When asked to reflect on what the past 30 years has meant to her, Ms. Jamie states that “every day is special and full of joy” and that “It’s always fun seeing different generations come to know music in my room!” Ms. Jamie’s contribution to music education in our community over the years has been a truly special and remarkable one!
