Diversion Being Constructed to Circumvent Closed Dix River Bridge

Will eliminate lengthy detour for many

SOMERSET, Ky. (Nov. 15, 2013) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is constructing a temporary crossing on the Dix River to divert traffic that would otherwise be blocked because of an emergency bridge closure on KY 1505 in Rockcastle County.

The temporary crossing – KYTC engineers call it a diversion – will eliminate the need for a lengthy detour.

On Friday, Nov. 8, KYTC engineers closed KY 1505 at the Dix River Bridge in Brodhead because of deterioration to the bridge.

With emergency funding from the KYTC Rural and Secondary Roads program, construction of the diversion began yesterday.

The diversion, upstream from the Dix River Bridge, will serve commuters until reconstruction of the current bridge, which is expected to be completed by spring 2014.

“We understand the inconvenience brought about whenever a bridge must suddenly be closed, but the safety of the public must be paramount,” said Bruce Neely, Chief District Engineer for the Department of Highways District 8, headquartered in Somerset. “We would like to thank the city and county officials as well as the property owners and utility companies for their cooperation in getting this diversion completed.”
