Girls Exploring Math and Science (GEMS) Conference

Anna Buckley, Madelyn Bullen, Caroline Coguer, Tiffany Fain, Mahala Saylor, Makayla Sadler, and Courtlyn Vanhook participated in the fifth annual Girls Exploring Math and Science Conference (GEMS) on Friday, November 2, 2012 at Somerset Community College.  This was a competed selection process and the girls submitted essays to earn their spots at the conference.  The conference is geared toward a fun-filled, educational day for eighth grade girls who have expressed an interest in math, science, engineering, information technology, and health-related fields. The female guest speakers provided hands-on workshops.   Each industry professionals who spoke to our students have a passion for their field of study and who want to encourage other females to pursue similar college degrees.

This year’s conference focused on careers in Surgical Technology, Criminal Justice, Hospitalist, Mathematics, Physician’s Assistant, and Physical Therapist Assistant.   In addition to attending the workshops, a career expo was held that featured hands-on activities by professionals in Radiography, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Air Methods Flight Nursing, Information Technology, AutoCAD, Engineering, Aviation, Cosmetology, Pharmacy, Math and Natural Science, Computer Science, and Nursing.  It was a great learning experience for our middle school students.  We look forward to attending the conference again next year.
