Joanie Alexander, Rockcastle County Middle School Teacher, was recently awarded the Eleanor Simmons Memorial Scholarship Award at the Kentucky Association of School Librarians’ Annual Fall Conference in Louisville.
The Simmons Award is presented annually to a student pursuing a Master’s degree or Rank I certification to become a School Library Media Specialist. Alexander is currently a student in the Media Education program at Western Kentucky University. She received a certificate and a check of $500.00 to apply towards her tuition and school expenses.
The award is named in memory of Eleanor Simmons, a librarian with the Jefferson County (KY) school system and a mentor to many new school librarians. This award is presented annually at the KASL Awards Luncheon to encourage students to enter the library profession. The Kentucky Association of School Librarians is the state organization for school librarians, advocating for exemplary library services for public and private school students in grades K-12 throughout the state.
