Kentucky Bluegrass Award Readers at RES

Eleven students read four or more of the KBA chapter book and completed a reading response for each book read in the 3rd-5th grade category during the 2015-16 school year. These students voted, earned a pizza party, and will each receive a $5 gift certificate to the upcoming Scholastic Book Fair at Roundstone. A total of thirty-one students participated in this category with a total of 120 books read and reading responses completed for each book. However, only eleven students met the challenge of reading four or more of the books. All Roundstone students participated in the picture book (K-2) category, but the 3-5 category was voluntary.
The overall state KBA winner for the 3-5 category was Duke, a historical fiction set during the WWII era and written by Kirby Larson. The overall K-2 winner was Monkey Goes Bananas, written by C.P. Bloom and illustrated by Peter Raymundo.
As a student choice program, only young people may vote for their choice of the top book from a Master List of ten books presented annually for their grade level. Each book has been chosen by a committee of readers who look for quality literature to appeal to a wide variety of readers.
