The Kentucky Derby Museum Outreach Program made a stop at Brodhead Elementary on Monday, December 2. “Creating Traditions” was the theme for students in grades 1 through 5 in Monday Morning Meeting. Students were introduced to the concept of traditions through a pretend birthday party where volunteers participated in a simple “play” to better understand how traditions begin and are passed on. They also participated in several well-known Derby traditions, including the singing of My Old Kentucky Home, the wearing of Derby hats and the presentation by the governor of the gold Derby trophy.
In smaller groups, the 3rd-5th grade students learned ways that math is used in day to day activities – even while preparing a horse for the Kentucky Derby. The program used several “real-life” examples to demonstrate using math to solve problems.
