MVES Students Visit Salt Petre Cave

By: Lila Holt, 2nd grade

My class went on a field trip to Salt Petre Cave. I learned about Echo Location. When a bat uses Echo Location, it can know where things are like bugs and trees. I had a fun time at Salt Petre Cave. If you ever go there, make sure that you do not hurt a bat. The temperature is 57 degrees. We also went through the Fat Man’s Misery.

My class went on a field trip to Salt Petre Cave. I learned never to touch a bat even though you think it’s cute. We saw cave crickets and two little brown bats. The temperature always in a cave is fifty-seven degrees Fahrenheit. We went in the Eco Auditorium. Did you know that they mined Salt Petre? We went through Fat Man’s Misery. It was a good experience for us because we are starting Unit two “Let’s Explore.” Bats are endangered and the Salt Petre salt was used for gun powder. John Lair used to have Saturday barn dances there.
