Officer Tom Atkin Sworn In as School Resource Officer

Rockcastle County Schools is pleased to announce that Officer Tom Atkin will be working in our district as a School Resource Officer (SRO).  Officer Atkin will be the first SRO in the history of our school district.  Officer Atkin comes to Rockcastle County Schools in a joint effort with the Mt. Vernon Police Department in order to provide additional security for the students and staff of Rockcastle County Schools.  Officer Atkin earned his degree from EKU and is a US Army Veteran of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.  He retired from the Kentucky State Police as a Sergeant and served as a member of the Special Response Team, KSP Academy Instructor and Investigations Sergeant.  He is a former Instructor for the Department of Criminal Justice Training in Richmond, KY and has also served in various capacities with the Rockcastle County Sheriff’s Office.

Officer Atkin is not a stranger to the school system.  Two  years ago he served as a security consultant at RCHS and, although a SRO is a different role, he is very familiar with the school setting.  Officer Atkin will be working with all 6 schools in the district and will be present at each location on a rotating basis.  His duties will include everything from traffic control to being a liaison between the school district and law enforcement.  Officer Atkin will also assist in providing educational training to students and staff regarding handling crisis situations as well as working with school administration and school counselors to support staff to assist students and provide services to students involved in situations where referrals to service agencies are necessary.

Rockcastle County Schools are excited and privileged to have a local officer with the experience, skills, and desire of Officer Atkin to assist us in our efforts to make Rockcastle County Schools one of the best school districts in the state!
