One Book Community Reading Project Features Kentucky Author

September 2016- For Immediate Release

The Rockcastle County High School Library joins with eight other counties in our region to participate in a One Book Community Reading Project this October. The selected title for this year’s One Book program is Silas House’s Young Adult novel, Eli the Good.

Eli the Good is a coming-of-age novel set during the American Bicentennial.  “In this tender and timeless novel by an acclaimed author, an unforgettable ten-year-old peels back his family’s secrets as he takes his first steps toward manhood,” according to the book jacket. It was released in 2009 to rave reviews and received the first annual Storylines Prize from the New York Public Library system, an award given to a book for use in the ESL and literacy programs of New York City.

Silas House, an Eastern Kentucky native, currently serves as the NEH Chair in Appalachian Studies at the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center at Berea College, where he is also an assistant professor of Appalachian Studies.

“We’re excited about joining with the Rockcastle County Public Library and other libraries in the area in this unprecedented community reading project,” said RCHS Librarian Janet Wells. Throughout the month, book clubs in the nine counties will be reading and discussing the book.  This is the first time these nine counties have joined together to read and discuss the same book.

There will be a Facebook page for the event, and all the activities from all the counties will be posted there. House will do weekly live sessions through the page, as well as a community reading the evening of October 27 at the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center on the Berea College campus. House has very generously donated the books for the project, including 55 copies to Rockcastle County High School, delivered by Rockcastle County Public Library Director Pam Chaliff and Kim Shelley, RCPL Bookmobile Librarian.

Rockcastle County High School has two teachers participating with their classes:  Mrs. Casey Harper and her first period Accelerated English 9 students and Mrs. Markita Proctor and her second period English 10 students.  Mrs. Janet Wells, RCHS Librarian, will work with these two teachers and approximately 55 students to provide supplementary teaching guides and the library area for group discussions.

The nine participating counties are Boyle, Lincoln, Garrard, Rockcastle, Laurel, Jackson, Estill, Powell, and Madison.
