RCMS “Dollars & Sense” Day

With the help of the Rockcastle County Extension office, community members, and RCMS staff, RCMS hosted  a financial simulation program for the 8th graders called “Dollars & Sense Day.”  The event introduced students to the “financial realities” associated with adulthood:  provision of food, clothing, shelter, etc. for a family and how these relate to career choices and success in school. Upon arrival, students received the equivalent of one month’s salary for a career they are interested in. Participants went throughout the town purchasing housing, transportation, child care, etc.   The program is designed to help young people understand how the impact of decisions made today or shortly after graduation can affect the course of their whole lives—decisions about educational paths, career options, lifetime mates and family living.   Of course, the students had to begin by paying their taxes.  Thank you to Jill Medley and Becky Payne from Mt. Vernon City Hall for volunteering to assist with that task.  We would also like to thank Citizens Bank and Jenni Ellis for providing lunch for our volunteers and Rockcastle Regional for providing cases of water.
