On June 7th, 8th, and 9th the Rockcastle County FFA Chapter traveled to Lexington to compete at the 87th State FFA Convention. The chapter had several teams and individuals compete in various competitions.
In the team contests Rockcastle County FFA competed and excelled. The Varsity Parliamentary Procedure Team placed 3rd. Team members were: President- David Gabbard, Vice-President- Pamela Miller, Secretary- James Clay Ballinger, Treasurer- Caleb Ballinger, Reporter- Trevor Sweet, Sentinel- Allie Johnson and Members – Hope Holbrook, Austin Kirby, Autumn Kirby, and Logan Miller. Savannah Goff was the alternate on the Varsity Parliamentary Procedure Team. The JV Parliamentary Procedure Team competed and made our chapter very proud with an excellent performance. Team members were: President- Sydney Hines, Vice-President- Hope Holbrook, Secretary- Autumn Davidson, Treasurer- Hannah Denny, Reporter- Elisha Blanton, Sentinel- Cole Ballinger, and Members – Daya McGuire, Heather Miller, Jarrett Burke, and Josh Martin with alternate Tiffany McGuire.
Several members competed in individual contests throughout the convention and had success. Rockcastle County had four members advanced to the state proficiency contests. David Gabbard received 2nd place in the Landscape Management Placement Proficiency contest. The following members competed, but failed to place in the top three in the state contests: Joshua McKinney – Agricultural Sales Entrepreneurship, James Clay Ballinger – Beef Cattle Entrepreneurship, Eric Bullock – Turf Grass Management Placement and Vegetable Production Entrepreneurship.
In the state speaking contest Rockcastle County had one state winner and one 3rd place. Eric Bullock was the state winner in Fruit and Vegetable Impromptu Speaking. David Gabbard took 3rd place in the Agriculture Mechanics Impromptu Speaking contest. The following members competed in the state speaking contests, but failed to place in the top three: Allie Johnson – Nursery and Landscape Impromptu Speaking, Autumn Kirby – Goat Impromptu Speaking, Pamela Miller – Prepared Public Speaking, James Clay Ballinger – Extemporaneous Public Speaking, Hope Holbrook – FFA Creed Speaking, Trevor Sweet – Turf and Lawn Impromptu Speaking, and Brittany Long – Dairy Impromptu Speaking.
Joshua McKinney received a $600 Agricultural Entrepreneurship grant to help expand and grow his supervised agriculture experience. Autumn Davidson and Pamela Miller received Kentucky FFA Alumni scholarship to pay for the expenses to attend the Kentucky FFA Leadership Training Center. Rockcastle County was awarded a State Gold Emblem which the highest award a chapter can receive.
Along with the state contest Rockcastle County also had several members that participated in leadership roles at the convention. Eric Bullock served as the State FFA Convention Committee Chair. Eric Bullock and Trevor Sweet served as voting delegates. Eric Bullock, David Gabbard, Hope Holbrook, Allie Johnson, Autumn Kirby, Pamela Miller, and Trevor Sweet served as members of the State FFA Courtesy Corps. James Clay Ballinger, Eric Bullock, David Gabbard, Allie Johnson, Autumn Kirby, Brittany Long, and Sierra Sturgill received their State FFA Degree which is the highest degree the Kentucky FFA can award an FFA member.
