The students at Roundstone Elementary School have been busy readers this year. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students have been participating in the Roundstone Readers Program over the course of the school year. This program involves students reading 5 books each month from different genres and book awards lists (including Newbery, Caldecott, and previous KBA winners) and completing a series of questions about the books. Once they have read the books, completed the reading log, and turned it in on time, they can earn a special food each at the end of the month. This year, the special food treats included caramel apples, Subway cookies & hot chocolate, root beer float or ice cream, candy buffet, jumbo cupcakes, and roasting marshmallows & s’mores. Also, students who completed the program five out of 6 possible months received a a gift certificate to be spent at the book fair.
During the 2014-2015 school year, 60% of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students (75 students) participated in the Roundstone Readers Program. Through their participation in the program, 940 books were read in relation to the program aside from the approximate 12,000 books that were checked out schoolwide over the entire school year.
