Scholarship Updates

NEW/JUST IN:

KENTUCKY MANUFACTURED HOUSING INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIP: Three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors who currently reside in modular, manufactured or mobile homes. These awards are available for university, college, technical, or vocational programs. A 300 word essay is required, as well as 3 letters of recommendation from business persons, clergy, or community leaders. Only one of the letters may be from school personnel. Applications are available in the guidance office.

GUY B. AND MABEL LYKINS SCHOLARSHIP: This $500 scholarship is open to high school seniors who are actively involved in community service, and who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Two letters of recommendation are required; one from a teacher and one from a community involvement source. Applications are in the guidance office, and will be accepted from February 23 to April 1, 2015.

NATIONAL WILD TURKEY FEDERATION/ROCKCASTLE CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP: The amount of this scholarship is yet to be determined, but is open to seniors who are current members (or who apply for membership) of the NWTF. Applications require an essay and 3 letters of recommendation, along with transcript, photo, NWTF membership, and a copy of current hunting license. ONGOING/PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED:

JACKSON ENERGY SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY CONTEST: Open to high school seniors whose guardians are Jackson Energy Cooperative members with their primary residence or business served by the cooperative. Applicants must submit an essay of 1000-1500 words on the topic “Why are the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math important for Kentucky’s future?” Deadline is March 15, 2015. Scholarship amount is $2,000. Application information is in the guidance office.

UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY PEPP SCHOLARS SUMMER PROGRAM: PEPP is a summer academic enrichment program for high school graduates who are interested in becoming rural physicians or dentists.  The PEPP program is a prestigious program that provides academic, research, and clinical activities, along with opportunities for networking with leaders in the health care industry. PEPP scholars will study chemistry and biology, and will have rotation in the Labor and Delivery and Operating Room departments at the UK Medical Center. Interested students can get an application in the guidance office. Deadline to apply is February 4, 2015.

KENTUCKY COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE PEPP PROGRAM: In addition to the PEPP Program at U.K., there is a similar program at the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pikeville, Kentucky. Students who are selected will participate in a variety of educational experiences targeted to enhance their personal interest in a medical career, add to their understanding of the elements of a medical education, and expand their awareness of how medicine is practices in a rural setting.  Interested students can get an application in the guidance office. Deadline to apply is February 28, 2015.

KENTUCKY FARM BUREAU SCHOLARSHIP: Seniors who have a minimum 3.5 GPA or a minimum 23 ACT score and whose legal guardian is a Kentucky Farm Bureau member can apply for this $1,000 scholarship. A short essay is required. Deadline for applications is February 28, 2015. Applications are in the guidance office.

UPPER CUMBERLAND COUNSELING ASSOCIATION HUMAN SERVICES SCHOLARSHIP: UCCA has developed a scholarship program for college bound seniors who plan to major in the area of human services (counseling, sociology, education, psychology, child development, social work, and special education). The scholarship amount is $500. Applications can be picked up in the guidance office; the deadline to apply is March 1, 2015.

KENTUCKY TRANSPORTATION CABINET CIVIL ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIPS: The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet offers two scholarship programs for students who are interested in civil engineering. The scholarships provide money for college, paid summer employment while in school, and full-time employment after college graduation. The Civil Engineering Scholarship Program is for students interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at WKU, U of L, or UK. The Civil Engineering Technology Program is for students interested in pursuing an associate’s degree in civil engineering technology at Big Sandy Community & Technical College in Prestonsburg or Bluegrass Community & Technical College in Lexington. More information and applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline to apply is March 1, 2015.

WHITAKER BANK/KHSAA SWEET 16 SCHOLARSHIP: Four scholarships in the amount of $1500 each will be awarded to senior student-athletes who participates in any KHSAA sanctioned sport activity. Scholarships will be based on excellence in three areas—academic achievement, leadership, and community service. Applications are available in the guidance office. Applications are due to the KHSAA by February 25, 2015.
