Scholarship Update 3-23-2017

 

**Students, note that some of these scholarships must be mailed directly to the sponsor. You must take care of getting those postmarked rather than giving them to the counselors. For all others, there is a box with collection folders in the guidance office for you to put your applications. There is an (*) next to the scholarships that are being collected in the guidance office.

·         Don’t wait until the last minute to start your applications!

·         You might be able to use the same essay for some of these scholarships!

·         If you don’t qualify for financial aid, you DO still qualify for many of these scholarships!

·         Fill out the applications NEATLY and COMPLETELY. This makes a big difference!

New:

*Mt. Vernon Lions Club Scholarship: The Lions Club has established a scholarship fund that will provide one annual scholarship in the amount of $1000 to a local senior. Two letters of recommendation, as well as a biographical sketch, are required. Applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline for submission is April 28, 2017.

*Rockcastle County Farm Bureau Scholarship:  Rockcastle County Farm Bureau will be offering a scholarship to a senior who is a member or whose parents are members of Farm Bureau. Applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline for submission is April 1, 2017.

Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA): Cumberlands WIOA offers tuition-only scholarships for students enrolling in eligible college and technical programs.  Students must be enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, at an eligible postsecondary institution in an approved program of study that leads to an industry recognized certificate, credential, or diploma in a high-demand workforce sector.  Current qualifying sectors are: Healthcare, Manufacturing, Transportation/Distribution/Logistics, Information Technology, Construction, and Criminal Justice. Students who are interested can contact Heather Stevenson, Cumberlands WIOA Youth Career Manager, at Heather@lcadd.org to request an application.

Previously Announced:

*Berea Masonic Lodge Scholarship: The Berea Masonic Lodge is awarding a $500 scholarship to an RCHS senior. There is no minimum GPA, but academics, community service, and extracurricular involvement will be considered in the selection of the winner. Applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline for submission is April 21, 2017.

*Rockcastle Kiwanis Scholarship: The Rockcastle Kiwanis Club is offering one $1000 scholarship to a senior who has a minimum 3.0 GPA and who is a member or past member of the Key Club. Two letters of recommendation are required, along with a short essay. Applications are in the guidance office. Deadline for submission is April 21, 2017.

Rockcastle County UNITE Coalition Hollie Barnett Scholarship: Rockcastle UNITE Coalition is offering a $500 scholarship to an active member of the RCHS UNITE Club. Applicant must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and must submit an essay and three letters of recommendation. Deadline for submission is Friday, April 21st by 3:00 p.m. (applications can be mailed directly or given to counselors)

Appalachian Health Career Scholarship: The Community and Economic Development Initiative of Kentucky at the University of Kentucky is giving scholarships to Appalachian students who are seeking education in health or a health-related field. These one year scholarships are allocated for full time students with a maximum award of $2500 per semester. Application packet must be postmarked by April 21, 2017.  To access the online portion of the application, go to http://cedik.ca.uky.edu/resources. Rockcastle Regional Hospital Scholarship: Rockcastle Regional Hospital is offering a scholarship to students who are planning to major in health care fields of study (diagnostic imaging, laboratory, physician, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, speech pathology). Applicants must have two letters of recommendation (preferably one educational and one community), and an essay of no more than 400 words describing why you wish to become a healthcare professional. Deadline for submission is April 20, 2017.

*Jim Cox Memorial Scholarship: This $500 scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to major in a science-related field or science education in college, and who has demonstrated proficiency in high school science courses. Applications are available in the guidance office, and are due by April 21, 2017.

Rockcastle County Chamber of Commerce Scholarship: The Chamber of Commerce will award one $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior. Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation (one educational and one community), as well as two short (one page) essays on selected topics which can be found in the application. Deadline to submit applications is April 7, 2017. Applications are available in the guidance office. (applications can be mailed directly to the Chamber of Commerce or given to counselors)

Kentucky Manufactured Housing Institute: Seven $1000 scholarships will be awarded to high seniors who live in modular or manufactured homes in Kentucky.  Applicants must submit a 300 word essay explaining the “impact of factory-built housing on your life” and three letters of recommendation (only one can be from school personnel).  Applications are available in the guidance office and must be post-marked by April 1, 2017.

*Guy and Mabel Lykins Scholarship: This $500 scholarship is open to high school seniors who will be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree (4 year), and who have maintained a 3.0 GPA (unweighted). The scholarship may be used for tuition and/or books. Applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline for submission is April 3, 2017.

Lindsey Wilson College Southeastern Kentucky Partnership Scholarship: LWC will offer a full tuition, room and board scholarship to three students who are within a 16 county area. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 and minimum ACT of 18, and must be Pell Grant eligible. There is also a 1-2 page essay required. Students who apply but are not selected will receive an additional $1000 for competing. Information is in the guidance office. Deadline for submission is April 1, 2017.

Kentucky Federation of Republican Women Scholarship: One scholarship in the amount of $1000 will be awarded to a senior girl who has been politically active within the Republican Party. The qualified applicant must submit a one page typed essay about a Republican woman you admire or who has influenced your life and why. Information is in the guidance office. Deadline for submission is April 1, 2017.

*Rockcastle Community Scholarships: The community has several scholarships, ranging from $500 to $2000, which are available to RCHS seniors. Applicants must write a 300 word essay concerning education and career goals. The application is available in the guidance office; deadline for submission is April 21, 2017.

*Cruisin’ in the Valley Scholarship: One $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a senior who plans on attending a college or technical school in the fall of 2017. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Applications are in the guidance office. Deadline to submit applications is April 21st.
