Rockcastle County Schools has been awarded the prestigious Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Distinguished Citizen Medal, recognizing their exceptional qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism. This accolade is reserved for organizations and individuals who contribute significantly to the defense, security, and freedom of their community, state, or nation.

The award was presented in acknowledgment of the district's swift and heroic actions during the train derailment in November 2023. The dedication and quick response of Rockcastle County Schools ensured the safety and well-being of the community during a critical time.

Superintendent Dr. Carrie Ballinger and several Transportation Department staff members were individually recognized as Distinguished Citizens for their outstanding efforts. The honorees include:
