Last week, Mrs. Shanlee Childress' 9th grade Advanced Physical Science class modeled the importance of seatbelts in cars because of Newton's first law. This activity leads students into a discussion of movement.

We celebrated National STEM day with some hands on fun during lunch! Students learned that the circular cylinder holds more weight than the square or the triangle. A circular paper cylinder is stronger than a square or triangle because it distributes stress evenly across its entire surface due to its lack of corners, while squares and triangles concentrate stress at their edges, making them weaker when under pressure; essentially, a circle can be seen as having an infinite number of "edges" that share the load more evenly. The students had some fun testing out this theory.
Thanks GEAR-UP!
